Paul Reed Smith Angelus Cutaway and Tonare Grand
It’s a good bet that the boutique guitar world held it’s collective breath during the Winter NAMM show when Paul Reed
Smith announced not one but two acoustic guitars for 2009,
the Angelus Cutaway and the Tonare Grand. Although PRS
has dabbled with acoustic guitars in the past, most notably
the prototype designed by both PRS and Dana Bourgeois in
the early nineties, the introduction of the Angelus Cutaway
and the Tonare Grand represent the first production acoustics offered by Paul Reed Smith. The Angelus Cutaway
sports a 15-1/2" body with a European/German spruce top,
rosewood back and sides, and the Tonare Grand boasts a
16" non-cutaway body. Either guitar can be upgraded with
a choice of Andirondac red spruce tops, Celtic cross inlays
and rosette, a choice between different two neck designs
and PRS’s proprietary acoustic pickup system. Other options
include figured mahogany or rosewood back and sides,
ebony fretboards and bridges and abalone top purfing. Both
guitars represent a multi-year venture that enlisted Steve
Fischer, senior acoustic guitar luthier at PRS, and the invaluable feedback of Tony McManus, Martin Simpson, Ricky
Skaggs and Cody Kilby.

Bogner Amplification Goldfinger
Fresh from Reinhold’s strange brew of electronics and alchemy,
a new Bogner Custom Shop amp was released at the NAMM
show: the Goldfinger. This amp will be available as a 1x12
combo or a head with a 2x12 cabinet—all decked out in a
creamy white cabinet dressing. It is a 45-watt amp with a switch
that can cut the power to 22 watts. It features four 6V6 output
tubes and 5 preamp tubes. According to Reinhold, it’s a two-channel design that’s capable of Ecstasy levels of gain, yet
allows for sparkling clean tones and classic crunchiness, too.
Each channel has its own clean or high-gain option. In addition,
the Goldfinger comes with two effects loops to run both pedals
and rack effects, and a spring reverb.
