Eventually carried a strap-on (hey now!) platform
with cooling fans under the laptop. And seek
shade. If inside, the same may be true when
playing steamy scenes.
5) Keep an eye on resources when making
a dense mix. Softsynths and processing and
looping eat up resources...
6) Ultimately, I didn’t like the “vibe” of the
pieces. I have an Axe-FX Ultra now...
What’s your favorite flanger?
FrankieSixxxgun: I’ve been using a Boss
BF- 2 forever, but it’s the only buffered pedal on
my board now, so I was thinking about replacing
it. What’s the business on the market these days
when it comes to Flangers?
localmotion411: MBox 2 has been
replaced with an M-Audio ProjectMix, so
desktop space is drastically limited from what
the pic shows, but you get the idea. Great
setup, but my Macbook Pro died on Friday
and I haven’t replaced it yet, and I’ve got
supah-huge hum coming from my monitor
speakers due to the new wall-mounted display
which I have yet to sort out.
Very loud amp and nice juicy tones. I’d like to
have a vintage DR, but until then, this will do.
metronome: I was wondering this too. I
have not tried an axe fx or Logic 9, but I assume
at some point in time the software amp sims
and effects will sound and feel as good as the
floorboards....Have they already?
Then the real question is, why would you spend
$1500ish on a modeler when that could almost
fund a new laptop and logic 9 (or pro tools or
something). Add in one of those new GIO’s from
Apogee and you even have a pedalboard for
live use. I know this would all add up to more,
but it wouldn’t if you already have the computer.
Even if you didn’t, for say $3000 you could have
a cool recording setup AND a live setup.
Is this going to be the wave of the future????

Is anyone out gigging
with a laptop?
Please note I am not comparing either modelers
or software sims to the real thing, there are
plenty of other threads for that. I am questioning
the use of a computer instead of an expensive
modeler. Surely the speed and possibilities on a
computer will surpass floorboards at some point.
With 2 kids in college,
I LOVE and need these
undervalued scores, why I need ‘em ALL is none
of your business (I tried that with my wife—
gp81: I am thinking of going this route with a
pedal modeler, recabinet on a macbook pro and
FRFR speakers. Please share your experiences
and/or horror stories, setups, tips and overall
impressions of gigging with a laptop. I am mainly
concerned with how reliable it is on stage.
Dexter.Sinister: I did. I ran Acid and
some softsynths and a VG8/RMC3/guitar
rig for looping, ambient soundscapes and
aleclee: I don’t think computers can
necessarily surpass high-end dedicated modelers
since a DSP will process signals much more
efficiently than a general purpose CPU. At some
point the general purpose computer will be able
to put people in their “happy place” tone-wise
but I only see a laptop outpacing a dedicated
modeler if those who design and build modelers
decide that there’s no market for more
The gallery crowd loved it.
The club chill-out room crowd loved it.
The restaurant crowd, not so much.
The happy hour crowd, not at all.
Busking was hit and miss.
Windup 43: I have
a MIJ Arion SFL- 1 that’s
outlasted a DEM, BF- 2 etc. Great under the
Lessons learned about hardware/software issues:
1) Max out your RAM. Duh.
2) Strip out background apps and keep the
laptop focused on performance. Duh.
3) NO INTERNET ANYTHING. Damn viruses
and stuff...double that for your studio
4) Keep your CPU cool. For outside
performances in the subtropics this is VERY
important. Had some hangs from that.
BadMelonFarmer: If you believe some of
the stuff that logic ships with, Nine Inch Nails do
their live stuff with Logic on macs and the killers too.
Dunno how much of it is... errrm marketing...
Seems like a cool idea..... but it’s one of those
things... if it is a night that “Technology Farts in
your Face” you would feel a bit of an ejit stood
on stage saying your amp has just “blue screen
of deathed”... “gimme a moment”
LOL... interesting idea...but I would want a back up.
Perhaps I am too cynical as work in IT and I have
to deal with that stuff each day. Cheers
