This style retainer has been used by Fender since 1952 with a few variations along the way.
As the story goes, when Paul Reed Smith started building guitars, he could not find a style of
strap button to his liking. His version of the story is that he took the string retainers off of 2
or 3 Fender basses from the music store that he was doing repairs for at the time, and used
them as “strap buttons” on the guitars that he was building on the side.
