Advanced Modern Rock Guitar Improvisation
| Toronto – Session 1
with Jon Finn and special guest John Petrucci
Designed for upper level players, Jon will teach a personalized and detailed
course laying out a clear method for rock improvisation. Although this
workshop will offer strenuous and intense chops-building exercises, the
main focus is to develop a set of tools that can be used to give you a
significantly larger vocabulary when improvising. Topics covered include
fretboard geometry—a new look at pentatonics, rhythmic and thematic
development, analysis of chord progressions, modal improvisation, arpeggios, alternate pentatonics, creative expression and much more.
Electric Blues You Can Use | Vancouver Session
with Emile D’eon and special guest Robben Ford
Take a look at how blues guitar playing has influenced music
from the 60’s and beyond. This course answers the question:
“How do I play blues/rock leads with the scales and licks I
know?” By studying and playing traditional styles and licks
from T-Bone to B.B King and learning how modern players like
Clapton, Ford, Trucks, and Mayer use those influences. Topics
include major/minor pentatonics, major and minor blues, major
scale, Dorian, and Mixolydian modes, 4 part chords (from major scale), 7#9 chords, and
harmonic minor scale. Right hand techniques such as alternate picking, pick and fingers, and
fingerstyle will also be covered. Discussions will also include tunings, string gauges, amps
and the use of effects. This seminar will take an in depth look at 5 songs over 5 days (class
selects from a list). Knowledge of the fingerboard is a prerequisite for this course.
Essentials of Jazz Guitar | Toronto – Session 2
with Rob Bulger and special guest Lorne Lofsky
Designed for the intermediate to advanced player, this course
will cover all of the things you need to take your jazz playing to the next level. Topics will include rhythmic comping,
chord voicings, voice leading, and improvising. Concepts to
develop your soloing such as using motifs, creating interesting melodic contours, and using chords to solo will be dis-
cussed and demonstrated. Major, jazz, harmonic, and melodic minor scales and respective
modes will be covered along with whole tone and diminished scales. Fingerings for all
major, minor, diminished, and augmented arpeggios will also be taught. All of this will be
applied to tunes of the standard jazz repertoire.
