Bruno & Oberg Jazz Guitar Summit on YouTube
This month’s web diversion is an fascinating
video series that Artist Works is in the middle
of presenting, featuring jazz guitar masters
Jimmy Bruno and Andreas Oberg. The two
were brought together at Artist Works’ Napa,
CA, headquarters as an experiment: put two
jazz masters and complete strangers together
to prepare a show in just four days. The entire
experience was taped and is now being presented in a massive 20-part series on You Tube.
After exchanging jokes, the two picked up guitars
and started feeling each other out—and that’s
when the first video gets good. It’s a rare opportunity to watch two masters feeling each other
out and settling into a groove, and that’s exactly
what the first few videos provide. “It’s like having
a conversation with someone,” Oberg commented early on, “you throw the ball back and
forth—it’s been great.” The videos show largely
the uncut experience—every mistake, stumble
and missed connection, though those are few.
endearing moments happen as they get
acquainted in the first few videos. By the
time they hit a good stride and start working
on tunes in the later videos, you’ll be waiting anxiously to hear their final performance.
Luckily, you don’t have to wait long, because
Artist Works gives you a portion of the Silo’s
Jazz Club performance in the sixth video.

The series begins as Bruno and Oberg meet
for the first time. As Bruno states, “Sometimes
you can get two really good musicians together and it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going
to play well together.” Heightening the tension in that regard is the fact that Bruno and
Oberg couldn’t be more different on the surface; Oberg is tall, young (“The same age as
my son!” Bruno noted), Swedish and classically
trained, while Bruno is short, Italian and self-taught. Of course, there wouldn’t be a 20-part
video series if they didn’t play well together.
The video and audio quality
are really great and showcase
these guys’ pure skill—not to
mention the gorgeous tones
pouring out of Bruno’s signature Sadowsky and Oberg’s
Benedetto. At press time,
Artists Works was on the sixth
video in the series. We recommend starting from the beginning, as some of the most
