OPENING NOTES
Pete Townshend’s Les Paul

Despite living beyond a Pete Townshend bashing on the 1974 Quadrophenia tour (the broken
neck and headstock were replaced), Townshend’s 1973 Les Paul Deluxe was irreversibly
damaged by the recent flooding in Nashville. (Inset photo taken before the flood.) The guitar
had been on display at the Musician’s Hall of Fame but was moved to a temporary home at
Soundcheck Nashville, a storage and rehearsal space along the Cumberland River, when the
museum lost its building in a legal battle over property that is now slated to host the city’s new
civic center. [See “ 50 Feet High and Rising,” p. 156]
