An early adopter of both spandex and
the Gibson Thunderbird IV, Pete Way
works the upper register of his famously
low-hung instrument during UFO’s
“No Heavy Petting” tour. Introduced by
Gibson in 1963 for $335, along with the
single-pickup Thunderbird II that listed
for $260, Thunderbirds remained fairly
unpopular in the ’70s. Players like Way
andthe Who’s John Entwistle started
using them after realizing their 34" scale
length and neck-through bodies offered
an increased rumble that worked
particularly well for harder-edged rock.
