“Etude 2” from Fabio
Zanon’s Heitor Villa
Lobos: The Complete
Solo Guitar Music.
This short arpeggio study
demands a lot of dexterity,
speed, and thoughtful
fingerings to pull off. It
taught me how to play
with a light touch on
the classical guitar and
helped me explore new
ways of playing extended
arpeggios.
Joaquin Rodrigo’s
“Concierto de Aranjuez”
from Pepe Romero’s
The Art of Pepe Romero:
Guitar Favourites.
Likely the most famous
of all works for classical guitar, this concerto
for guitar and orchestra
really helped elevate the
stature and respect of
the instrument. Regularly programmed by top
orchestras around the
world, it’s truly a landmark
work—and a blast to play.
“Sonata Mongoliana”
from Štêpán Rak’s The
Guitar of Štêpán Rak.
Beautiful and brutal,
this piece is my favorite
concert closer. It’s very
technically demanding,
requires mastery of very
unusual, face-melting
guitar techniques, and
takes a ton of stamina to
make it to the end. It is
hard on the hands, nails,
and guitar, but the audi-
ence reaction makes it
worthwhile.
“Aquarelle” from
Alieksey Vianna’s
Alieksey Vianna Plays
Sergio Assad.
Sergio is easily among
the top composers of
modern guitar music. The
three movements of this
piece contain some of
the coolest phrases and
rhythms, some of the most
heart-wrenching melodies,
and some of the sickest
guitar licks and grooves in
the business.
Johann Sebastian
Bach’s “Chaconne from
BMW 1004” from Jascha
Heifetz’s The Complete
Album Collection.
Bach’s epic masterpiece
for solo violin has been
transcribed and played by
many classical guitarists.
The Chaconne is so power-
ful, beautiful, and master-
fully written that I almost
dare not touch it. I suppose
it is for these same reasons
that I can’t seem to keep
my hands off it.
